Auk crossing to Isle Martin

Isle Martin is only accessible by boat. Thanks to funding from The Postcode Community Trust we were able to purchase a new (to us!) boat, to improve acces to the island. Our new boat, named “Auk”, has a number of features that makes the island more accessible to everyone. Drop down front: allows for landing on the beach, so we are not restricted by tides and only using the jetty. Also allows less mobile visitors to step more easily onto and off the boat. Plastic construction: Is sturdy and tough, making it suitable for inexperienced users with less damage to the boat from any occasional bumps. Removable seats: Combined with a flat bottom inside makes it perfect for switching between roles as a passenger ferry and work boat. The seat construction also provides handy stores for safety equipment such as life jackets.

Through this funding we have also been able to purchase new safety equipment such as life jackets, which includes 2 baby life jackets and 2 children’s life jackets.

Along with funding from Ullapool Harbour Trust and the Voluntary Action Fund we have been able to fund a total of 10 new volunteers to achieve their level 2 powerboat certificate.

In order to facilitate the use of the new boat, coordinate volunteers and engage new visitors we have also been able to fund the post of an Access Officer for the summer of 2017. Gill Wilson assists with anything Access related as well as working with school groups, volunteer trips and is also scheduling 4 dedicated day trips for disabled and at risk groups.
