Isle Martin Seaweed Festival: Year of Coasts and Waters 2020
Isle Martin Trust is delighted to announce that our Isle Martin Seaweed Festival has been selected to be supported by the Year of Coasts and Waters 2020 events fund, managed by EventScotland. The Seaweed Festival will be part of the official programme for the year and has also been part-financed by the Highland & Moray FLAG European & Maritime Fisheries Fund Programme and Scottish Government and is receiving local funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Scottish Natural Heritage through the Coigach and Assynt Living Landscape Partnership.
In 2020, Scotland celebrates its coasts and waters with a year long programme of events and activities which will shine a spotlight on these vital elements of our landscape. From our beautiful natural features including coasts, lochs and rivers to our industrial heritage such as our canals, mills, and the creation of our national drink – whisky, Scotland’s coasts and waters have shaped our culture, our stories and our way of life.
Marie Christie, Head of Development at VisitScotland said: “We are delighted to be supporting Isle Martin Seaweed Festival as part of Year of Coasts and Waters 2020. Scotland provides the perfect stage to explore the amazing array of riches present in our coasts and waters and this festival will shine a light on the importance of seaweed to our cultural and economic heritage.”
Our unique festival is being designed to appeal to both local residents and visitors alike. Isle Martin trust is passionate about caring for our marine environment and recognises the importance of seaweed within this ecosystem.
The Festival will be a great leisure and learning opportunity starting on the boat trip to the island!
Our festival will be linking in with national seaweed initiatives such as Natural History Museum & Marine Conservation Society Big Seaweed Search
