A presentation by Prof Jason Hall Spencer on the maerl and the maerl beds of the Wester Ross Marine Protected Area

Wester Ross Marine Protected Area is the largest maerl MPA in Scotland. Wester Ross as a whole is famous for mearl as it has the lion’s share of this habitat in Scotland.  Prof. JASON HALL SPENCER is the leading expert on this pink seaweed and he will be giving a half-hour talk about why it is precious. Maerl beds are the jewel in the crown of our habitats and are Scotland’s example of the great barrier reef. The habitat it forms has been growing since the last ice age so some of these habitats are 8 to 10,000 years old. He will show a short film made locally about maerl produced from surveys by a coalition of citizen science survey groups which has recently formed into The Blue Hope Alliance – a citizen science survey network in the North West. His talk will start at 8 pm on the 11th of September at the Ferry Terminal.
