ABOUT
The Isle Martin Seaweed Festival is organised by a working group of Isle Martin Trust (IMT) members with environmental artist Julia Barton as Festival Curator.
Festival Working Group
The Festival Working Group is comprised of IMT board members Steve Twitchett, John McIntyre, and Lesley Strachan, who have, together with Julia Barton, been instrumental in making this exciting new festival a reality. The team has been working hard behind the scenes, with each taking a specific role to ensure the smooth running of the event. Steve has been busy preparing the island for the festival and is managing Covid-19 safety. John is overseeing the ferry that will provide access to the festival, and Lesley is helping support community involvement and contributing to the artistic elements of the festival.
Festival Curator and Event Organiser
Julia Barton is an environmental artist, who has worked in the area since 2012. She is fascinated by seaweed and the health of our shoreline environment. While learning to identify seaweeds on her local Coigach beaches, she became literally and figuratively entangled in the marine plastic litter and climate change issues, which has since been the main focus of her work.
She developed many of her Littoral Art Project installation and engagement events during artist residencies on Isle Martin and in Ullapool at An Talla Solais. Her work has toured from Ross-shire to Shetland and the Borders.
Throughout her work in the littoral zones and collecting litter, her passion for observing seaweed has continued to grow. Convinced that the extraordinary, yet often overlooked seaweed needs to be celebrated, she proposed the idea that Isle Martin Trust host Scotland’s First Seaweed Festival to celebrate Scotland’s Year of Coasts and Waters #YCW2021. Postponed from 2020, she is thrilled that this special event is now at last taking place.
