2021 SEAWEED FESTIVAL PROGRAMME

The Festival takes place from 6th– 12th September in and around Ullapool, culminating in two days of themed events on Isle Martin on the 11th and 12th September.

Aug 14th – Sept 18th Art of Seaweed exhibition in the windows of An Talla Solais Gallery Argyle St. Ullapool 

Mon 6th Seaweed identification walk & activities Durnamuck Beach, Little Loch Broom 1 – 4 pm 

Tues 7th Colour of Seaweed creative activities with artist Jenny Grant and MaryKate Thomson at Ullapool Pier 1 – 5 pm 

Weds 8th Seaweed identification walk with local guides Achnahaird Beach 1 – 4 pm

Thur 9th Mythology of Seaweed activities with artist Fadzai Mwakutuya and Justine Ritchie at Ullapool Pier 1 – 5 pm 

Fri 10th Seaweed identification walk with local guides Ardmair Beach 1 – 4 pm 

Fri 10th Seaweed Film Night  Ullapool Ferry Terminal 7 – 9 pm

11.30 am Professor Juliet Brodie & Natural History Museum film: Introduction to the wonders of seaweed

12.00 noon Ailsa McLellan, Marine Scientist: Illustrated presentation Kelp – farm it, don’t dredge it, why it’s up to coastal communities to protect our precious seabed. John McIntyre, Ecologist: ‘Seaweed in the Earth’s System’ 

1.00 pm Jayson Byles, Forager & Chef: Foraging and tasting 

2.00 pm Kirsty ……..Marine Conservation Society: Learn how to undertake a Big Seaweed Search survey 

3.00 pm Kyle McPherson, Forager, Free Diver & Farmer: Presentation on Seaweed, the need for sustainable seaweed farming

 4.30 pm Sustainability of Seaweed discussion with presenters & attendees, both in person & via the festival Webinar 

Throughout the day: Seaweed Identification & Observation Walks with local guides – make a piece of Algae Art – visit the lazy-beds – examine seaweed under the microscope with Aberdeen Science Centre – visit the kelp burning experiment

11.30 am Professor Juliet Brodie & Natural History Museum film: Introduction to the wonders of seaweed 

12.00 noon Miek Zwamborn, Dutch artist & author of The Seaweed Collector’s Handbook: illustrated presentation As the Gemweed Drifts 1.00 pm Artists share their journey with seaweed 

2.00 pm Cathy Dagg local Archaeologist will explain the Coigach kelp burning experiment, reconstructing what was an important industry in the 18th century 

3.00 pm David Gange, historian & author of The Frayed Atlantic Edge, will kayak to Isle Martin to share how important the foreshore has been to Highland communities 

4.30 pm Discussion on ‘Seaweed as Creative Material’ with presenters & attendees, both in person & via the festival Webinar 

Writing and sound workshops with Jon Miller & Lisa McDonald
